What is the K Desktop Environment?
A nice looking window manager (kwm) that is stable but has nice features.
A panel applet (kpanel) that is stable but has nice features.
A file manager (kfm) that is stable but has nice features (e.g., it is also a web browser).
A standard or specification for programs to adhere to... so that they fit nicely with the window manager, panel, and file manager.
Can I use KDE stuff with non-KDE stuff?
Short answer: YES
Long answer:
To use KDE programs, KDE (and QT) must be installed
Some programs are KDE aware, but do not require KDE (e.g., StarOffice)
Non-KDE programs will not comply with KDE specifications. For instance, they won't dock into the panel because they don't know about the panel applet.
KDE applications will run under GNOME and Enlightenment -- this includes kpanel.
Which is better -- GNOME or KDE?
KDE is less customizable -- but is getting more customizable all the time.
KDE is more stable -- but GNOME is getting more stable all the time.
KDE is more girlfriend/wife friendly -- GNOME is more fun.
Who gives a rat's ass? They both run the same stuff.
Nice features
tasteful, easy to use widgets
kppp -- Makes PPP connection easy and convenient.
kpanel -- Your standard panel; supports docking of KDE apps.
kfm -- A file manager plus stripped-down web browser.
drive icons (automatic mounting)
transparent font background on desktop
bat screensaver
kdf -- Graphical representation of free drive space.
kmail -- Nice little e-mail program
kwintv -- Television application (requires a TV tuner card -- duh!)
There are others, but GNOME/Enlightenment has them, too.
